Past Pupil from Monkstown

Written by AMASC IRELAND. Posted in Newsletter.

Jasper Coyle, past pupil of Monkstown, on the occasion of his daughter's recent wedding, and as a young boy in Montessori (left).

He remembers vividly his first day at school in January 1954, dressed in brown  trousers from his sister's large teddy bear. He realised there was something wrong seeing the other boys in uniform (grey trousers) and protested entering the school.  Jasper’s sisters Sarah, Elizabeth, Brigid and Catherine all joined the school. He made his first communion in the school chapel on 8th December 1954.

Sr Eveleen Coyle rscj, aunt to the five children, entered the order in Roehampton in 1916 after her degree at UCD. Sr Coyle was professed in 1925 in Rome and was in all the Irish schools during her lifetime. She passed away in Mount Anville 17th November 1969. RIP

Large books of records, handwritten by the nuns, are in the archives of the Sacred Heart based in Mount Anville.  Fascinating to anyone who attended, are lists and dates of entries to  the school where you are reminded of many familiar names from the past, among them boys who started in the Montessori.  Jasper is today close friends with some of those pupils.

There are photographs and diary entries reminding us of the events making up the school year: raising money for building fund, hockey teams, the yearly bazaar,  debating, arrival and departures of the nuns between the schools.

If anyone can contribute any school records such as report cards, school annuals, photographs, the Archivist would be very pleased to add to the collection.  You can contact Eibhlis Connaughton at Mount Anville: This email address is being protected from spambots. The Sacred Heart Lourdes Society, formed in October 2016, had its first committee meeting in March 2017. As our first initiative, two of the sisters of the Sacred Heart will be sponsored to take part in the 2017 pilgrimage, as a thank you for their long-standing encouragement of the involvement of Mount Anville girls.

We are currently working on a fundraising event for October 2017, and on the design of a Sacred Heart Lourdes Society pin.

Committee members: Susanne O’Reilly (Chair), Lisa Geoghegan (Secretary), Claire Moloney (Secretary), Frances Meenan (Treasurer), Maire Kirwan, Niamh Gaughan, Caoimhe Byrne

If anyone would like to get involved with the society or help with our fundraising event, please email:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Appreciation of Sister Dolores Considine rscj

By Noeleen Tiffney present Principal of St Catherine’s, Armagh

Sister Dolores Considine (R.I.P.), RSCJ and the first Principal of Saint Catherine’s College (1973 – 1982) as we know it, passed away on Sunday the 8th January 2017 in Scotland.

Sister Considine was an educational visionary and advocate for social justice whose legacy reaches far beyond this local area.  The education system is now attempting to catch up with a vision that she implemented over 40 years ago.  A humble soul, she declined to come to the opening of the building that we named after her, preferring to shun all plaudits and playing down her achievements.

Her original vision continues to drive our desire to provide the very best for every child who comes through our doors, regardless of background or ability.   Her death is a significant passing in the life of this school and our community is therefore in mourning.

May she rest in peace.

“I see myself as applying a flickering spark in 1973, and I salute the magnificent teams who have run with the fragile flame, tending and extending … to the beacon it is today!”  - Sister Dolores Considine

Message from the Chairperson

Dear Past Pupils,

Autumn is in the air and hopefully we all have many enjoyable activities and engagements ahead.  The very active members of the

AMASC, MAPPA, Benevolent Fund, Sophie Barat and Cork Committees have worked very hard in arranging many activities.

The first meeting of our Film Club will be on Wednesday 20th September and on the third Wednesday of every month throughout the year in the Odeon Cinema, Stillorgan, Co. Dublin.  Parking beside the cinema is very easy and Stillorgan is served by many bus routes.  We look forward to viewing many  wonderful films.

Our trip to Armagh is scheduled to take place on Friday 20th October.  This will be a great  occasion for many of us to travel to Armagh and visit the school which we have not been in since our school days.

Our annual visit to Joigny in 2018 will be from Thursday 3rd May to Sunday 6th May.  We have 15 places available but bookings are coming in fast.  If you are interested you should contact Jessica in the Past Pupils Office.  Once again, we hope to have French conversation classes after the Coffee Mornings in February, March and April 2018 so as to brush up our French for the visit!

Thank you for all your support in 2017 and  looking forward to your continuing support.

Best wishes,

Joanne Sheehan

Chairperson, AMASC (Ireland)

MATER ADMIRABILIS by Pauline Perdrau, RSCJ, is one of the most-loved images of Our Lady.

Perdrau born in 1817, who would later become a Religious of the Sacred Heart, painted the fresco in 1844. The Feast of Mater Admirabilis (October 20) is a treasured traditions of the Sacred Heart and this year marks the 150th anniversary
